The flamenco cultural association, which pays tribute to the seasoned flamenco singer Pepe Montaraz, was awarded the Caracol de Oro (“Golden Snail”) at the 52nd La Caracolá de Lebrija flamenco festival.

The flamenco cultural association Pepe Montaraz was forged in the lively flamenco discussions in the Bar de los Conejos, run by Frasquito Montaraz, brother of Pepe Montaraz and admirable flamenco singer of saetas. The association was first located in Calle Corredera (1977), and since 1980 it has been located in an iconic venue in the Callejón de los Frailes in Lebrija. The walls of what is today the only local cultural association where countless flamenco photographs and moments are displayed. Its walls are the repository of the infinite experiences shared in this home of flamenco, where singing, guitar playing, dancing and shouts of encouragement to the rhythmic tempo are enjoyed and felt in a direct, close, almost family-like manner, such closeness as the impact that El Cuervo had on Domingo El Melón in his debut at Venta del Toro.

Since 1990, the flamenco cultural association Pepe Montaraz has awarded its highest distinction, the Giraldilla Flamenca, to outstanding artists and institutions for their defence of the flamenco art, in a cultural week which brings together in the association old and new aficionados.

This recognition come about in association with an important name in the study and dissemination of flamenco in Lebrija: the Master Ricardo Rodríguez Cosano, adopted son of the city of Lebrija and posthumously awarded the well-deserved Prize for Educational Merit in the province of Seville in the “Best innovative teaching work for flamenco” category.

La Peña flamenca Pepe Montaraz trouve son origine dans les « tertulias flamencas » du Bar de los Conejos, dirigé par Frasquito Montaraz, frère de Pepe Montaraz et admirable chanteur de saetas. Son siège était d’abord dans la Calle Corredera (1977), et depuis 1980, bénéficie d’un siège emblématique sur le Callejón de los Frailes, à Lebrija. Les murs de ce qui est aujourd’hui l’unique Peña locale sont entièrement recouverts d’images et de moments flamencos. Ses murs sont le témoignage des innombrables expériences partagées dans cette maison du flamenco où le chant, la guitare, la danse et les clameurs rythmées font profiter et sentir d’une manière directe, proche, presque familiale, l’émotion que Domingo El Melón a suscitée à El Cuervo, à l’occasion de son début dans La Venta del Toro.

Depuis 1990, la Peña flamenca Pepe Montaraz décerne la plus haute distinction, la Giraldilla flamenca, à des artistes et à des institutions éminentes pour leur défense du flamenco, au cours d’une semaine culturelle qui rassemble les nouveaux et anciens amateurs en son siège.

Cette reconnaissance est née d’un nom essentiel dans l’étude et la diffusion du flamenco de Lebrija : le maître Ricardo Rodríguez Cosano, fils adoptif de la ville de Lebrija, a reçu à titre posthume le Prix du mérite éducatif de la province de Séville dans la modalité « Meilleur travail éducatif innovant pour le flamenco ».
